Inverlussa mussel farm is
situated in Loch Spelve on the south east corner of the Isle Of
Mull. It is considered to be very suitable for rope grown mussel
cultivation due to the purity of its waters with virtually no human
habitation around its shores, and therefore it is normally
classified as “category A” shellfish growing waters.
Loch Spelve has very little
mixing between the full salinity salt water and the fresh water from
the mountains, although this is very challenging when producing rope
grown mussels and gives the company many difficulties, it does
produce mussels which are known for their sweet, fresh and salty
taste, which was recently voted “Producer of the best Scottish
mussels 2009” .
Inverlussa Mussel Farm is proud
to have been able to build up a strong team of young local people
for its workforce. The company takes the quality and safety of its
product very seriously, and apart from the normal “end product
testing” the company was the first to develop its own system to
carry out pre harvesting analysis and quantification of naturally
occurring, “potentially harmful toxic algal blooms”. This work is
carried out on site by a dedicated member of staff.
The company is a supply member
of the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG). This is a
co-operative, based in Bellshill near Glasgow. SSMG handles the
marketing and processing for around 20 shellfish producers in
Scotland and Shetland, our customers include Waitrose, Tesco,
Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s, Asda, Lidl, and Aldi.
Mussel Farming is still
relatively new in Scotland, and until now the most common method of
growing rope cultivated mussels has been single ropes with plastic
pegs. Over the last 4/5 years Inverlussa has been evaluating the
potential of using the continuous rope culture system from New
Zealand. During this coming season in 2010, Inverlussa will be the
first farm in Scotland to harvest almost its entire crop from the
continuous system. Although there are still problems to be ironed
out, the advantages seem attractive, and we believe this system
could be the future in Scotland.
Inverlussa Mussel Farm has
recently received accreditation from “Friends Of The
Sea”.for..Sustainable Fish production.
